Cigar coolers for blast furnace, also known as copper jackets, are used where more intensive cooling is required, like in the open areas between the plate coolers, or when there is insufficient existing spacing of the flat plate coolers.

Sometimes cigar coolers and cooled panels are used during a blast furnace campaign for improvements to the existing cooling system. A copper jacket is normally machined to form a cylindrical core from a solid copper bar and a single channel is added by drilling and plugging.

Cigar coolers or copper jackets for blast furnace are normally inserted on a horizontal and vertical plane on the centerlines between adjacent flat plate coolers. Usually a cylindrical hole is drilled through the furnace shell and existing refractory lining with a core drill for the purpose of installation of a cigar cooler.

The copper jacket use increases the resistance of the refractory lining to chenmical and mechanical attack mechanism and increases the cooling system area. However it is necessary the strength of the shell is checked before the use of the cigar coolers since they results in increase of appertures in the blast furnace.
